Global COE Program - Kyoto University - In Search of Sustainable Humanosphere in Asia and Africa

The West Asia Field Station has been located in Cairo, Egypt and this year it is temporarily operating in Istanbul, Turkey.

We will proceed to organize field station systems related with the coverage of all of West Asia, especially Turkey, as well as promote collaboration with the Center for Islamic Area Studies at Kyoto University (KIAS).

The main topics of our research are as follows.
1. The situation of Islamic resurgence in the "secular" Turkey.
2. The movement of the social groups such as Tariqas (Sufi orders), Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan al-Muslimin), and the groups related to these organizations.
3. Islamic financial system based on Islamic law (Shari'a).
